Adding a new template? Say cheese, click and it's done!

Simplify the tedious task of adding a new template with Bitrix Site Manager’s innovative integration tool.

The overwhelming need to innovate is what is driving all businesses today. Change is inevitable and businesses often ponder about their need to innovate better. No one can appreciate this better than Web Based content businesses. Adding one feature can risk the integrity of the entire content management system!

Bitrix’s extensive research on application integration has resulted in one of the most well architectured and easy to use Content Management Systems (CMS) - the Bitrix Site Manager. This standalone application is pioneering innovative and comprehensive content management solutions for all web based businesses.

Every individual prefers to have his own unique site design and structure that differentiates it from others. The Site Template in Bitrix provides this gamut of capabilities for customizing your own user interface. Let’s say you want to change your site design based on a holiday season, the Edit Site option enable quickly and easily choose any template for any condition. In addition to this it also allows you to apply and showcase some flash based templates too.

The process for the template integration is simple. Use the basic template and place all the sliced images, forms, tables, etc. Transform every functional design element into a working component and step by step replace every image inside the images library. Then using the CSS editor, simply change the style and layout. Now apply the layout to the site and there you go ! Just add the content to the site and your site can be made LIVE without even a single change on any linking required.

This simple process will convert your PSD design into a ready to deploy template in less than 4-5 hours. This means you can change the look of the website on a daily basis for special seasons like Spring, New year, Christmas, etc.

Who said adding content dynamically is a challenge in a CMS

CREATE in 3 clicks – one, two and three!

Bitrix highly intuitive user interface lets you create content in 3 clicks. Could it get any simpler?

I really admire any content management system’s approach to solving a portal’s woes. All content can be added, deleted, categorized and managed from a single web based console. This problem becomes even more evident for portals where new content is being generated rather quickly. And to top this list of challenges is the fact that many times the number of users multiply and the size of content continues grows rapidly.

To help address this problem, the Bitrix Site Manager uses a very innovative 3 step process to creating content, pages, sections or categories.

Users can create pages and sections in 3 simple steps: Use the Create Menu toolbar to create a page or a section.

Adding a page

Name the page and change its properties like section name, visuals, etc.

Specifying the properties of the page

Adding the content of the page

To create sections, the user can use the create menu tool to quickly create a section, link it with the menu and set its properties. The menus can be edited within the page for easier site management. New sections in the menus will automatically show up across all the pages of that section.

Modifying the menu

Of course, the problem really arises when you need to delete pages. Especially if they are linked together, or to the menu. Bitrix Site Manager has a unique feature of deleting pages with only 2 clicks – and still retaining the menu linking structure!

The moment each page is saved, the internal indexing engine automatically indexes the content and updates the index table. This allows an instant update into the site’s content searching facility.

Editing the menu sections

Finally, one of the handiest tools is the automatic site map creation. Users don’t need to update the site map, or even request a new map creation. Based on the created site menus – the site map is created in real time.

Simplified MS Office like functionality. With Bitrix Site Manager’s highly simplified UI, working with the site manager is as familiar and simple as MS Office

Having worked with the MS Office throughout my professional life, I only have one complaint from all applications – why can’t they make the UI so intuitive and friendly like that of MS Office?

Well, the Bitrix Site Manager is successfully achieved just that … and more !

Just like a regular Windows desktop, there is a START button that takes me to any section of the site including the various control panel tools and shows the recently visited pages of the control panel. I can even store my favorite or bookmarked sections here for easier tracing. The best part about this design is that when I am working on a particular page or a section, then edits on this page are restricted only to this page or section. Just like in MS Office, files of a particular folder are only restricted to that folder. Changing the files will only change the content of that folder, not the directory.

The WYSIWYG editor is amazing. I can make edits right into the HTML and CSS using a simple pop up window. Almost any part of the code can be edited. Just like MS Word, I can copy text and paste it again to prevent writing it again; I can do exactly the same for similar web pages, sections or even categories. And its as easy as Ctrl C + Ctrl V !

One of the most versatile features of the Bitrix Site Manager is that I can secure my content for the specified user groups. So I can prevent unauthorized viewing to sensitive content on the site. This same engine also allows me to give my premium users access to privileged content. Just like Windows creates a hierarchy of authorized individuals, the Bitrix site manger can create such authorization for users, content creators, authors, etc.

MS Office has always been very user friendly. Part of this lies in easy and intuitive answers to a user’s problem. Like when you move your mouse over a button, a pop up window displays the action that would happen if you click that button. The Bitrix Site Manager has something very similar, as you move your mouse over any button, it intuitively tells you the action and result. This makes the entire experience of using the software all the more simple.

One of the biggest challenges for any content management process is workflow management. This includes version control and revisions. The Bitrix Site Manager has an automated Workflow manager that completely controls and automates every document’s editing, revisions and versions. And the best part is that it can all be controlled from the page itself.

3-tier site navigation and control

An intricate aspect of any well designed Content Management System is the ability to distribute the different functions of the site vis-à-vis designing, content and browsing. Basically the site needs to have 3 fundamental layers of control.

The Bitrix Site Manager’s well designed framework allows site managers 3 levels of functional control. The first and the simplest is the Browser Level Control. This level is for site users and site testers to ensure the site is easily accessible and content linking and navigation is correct.

The next level is the Content Level Control. This gives your content team the browser based editing functionality. So content creation is no longer restricted by text editors like MS word. Content can be directly written into the page – via the browser. This dramatically saves bandwidth and risk of information loss.

The utmost control is provided by the Design level. This level is ideal for site managers and web masters to have a holistic control over the site, its navigation, content placement, colors, themes, etc.

Let’s dig a little deeper into each level.

Browser Level:

This is the face of your site. All users and site visitors see this aspect of your site. They see the menus, the theme, the colors and the navigation. Your site tester can use this level to imitate a user and his experience on your site. This is extremely beneficial since the tester can do nothing from this level that will jeopardize the integrity of your site and its content. However, he can stress test the site for errors and navigational faults.

However, if required, the tester can be given privileges for basic editing. This allows him to make changes quickly without much hassle. This level of control is most suitable for every day edits like news, forums, blogs, etc.

Content Level:

In this level, you can control the site’s content directly from each webpage you visit. This Level is excellent for Content editors who can review content before publishing it online. Special components and modules can be exposed to increase or decrease the level of authority over the site’s content. For each content management function, pop up menus are displayed and they allow a very simplified content editing facility.

All this can be done directly from each page, so the editor does not need to go into the control panel each time for any edit or change.

Design Level:

This is a comprehensive level of control that allows the user complete content and design editing facility. Component configuring is possible with a single drop down menu and there are special component editing modules for the site’s extra features and functions.

Components can be easily copied and replicated to reduce section creation time. In fact, the CSS files can be directly accessed from this mode to allow editing on the site’s design elements as well.

The Debugger gives a complete report on the performance, components used, page generation time, SQL Queries fired, etc. The cache can also be renewed for components.

Control Panel:

Finally the control panel provides a single point administrative interface for all site related management. This includes content, design, navigation, user authority and layout. This single point interface makes content editing very simple since it allows the administrator to access anything – anytime!

Killing the Menu Nightmare – single click menu creation

One of my worst moments of working with a complicated system like a Content Management System arises when I am creating ‘Menus’. These are the horizontal or vertical navigational items that allow users to navigate through a website and reach the farthest content items in a navigational tree.

However, the Bitrix Site Manager’s highly intuitive and user friendly menu creator is actually a breeze to work with. I simply login as administrator, navigate to the specific page where I would like to create the menu and using the content editor mode, I quickly add the menu items and their respective links. A pop up window makes this so easy – I can hardly believe my eyes !

I can change the color schemes and even enable rollover modes to make my menu look beautiful. Even in the future, I don’t need to keep linking new menu items each time I add a menu item! All I do is just add the menu and decide its position relative to the others. It’s as simple as that.

There are pre designed templates that make it very easy to setup the menus. I don’t even need to create special menu tabs. The advanced control tab allows me to create and edit menus according to my site’s design and navigation. I can simply drag and drop the menu items as I please. The menu can be managed from the public side of the site as well.

Examples of menu provided with Bitrix Site Manager:

1. Blue tabs

2. Gray tabs

3. Horizontal multilevel

4. Vertical multilevel

One of the most painful part of creating menus is controlling them for time based events like Special Occasions, Seasons, Birthdays, etc. The Bitrix Site Manager’s advanced menu control allows me to setup special menu items based on time. Not only that, I can also control the type of visitor who will have access to this menu. So if I want to extend a special Christmas discount to my premium users – only they will be able to see that special menu for a limited time and avail of the offer.

Any website owner will agree that menu designing is one of the most tedious tasks and hence usually the menu design is not changed time and again. However, any site owner would want to do that since it makes the site more lively and exciting to browse through. The Design mode of the site toolbar allows a single click deployment of any template with colors and fonts. And I can even go into the CSS files and edit the design individually.

A particular feature that really simplifies this entire affair of creating menus is a new page wizard. I can just create a particular page for a specific section of the site and the menus get updated automatically.

Adding site menu item in a new page wizard:

The Bitrix Site Manager’s highly flexible menu manager gives me tremendous control over the site’s design and layout. Now I don’t even need a web designer to edit and configure menus.

Feed your users with every type of video – all from a single player !

The new Bitrix Media Player, now part of the latest release 7.0 of the Bitrix Site Manager is a one stop shop for all viewing and sharing of video content.

If you are looking to provide streaming or buffered video to your users, the Bitrix Media Player would be just the right tool to use. The new update allows the player to be integrated into the blog as well as a ‘Embed Video’ button will be provided in the Bitrix WYSIWYG editor.

Many times your video might not be of a particular format. Instead of having to convert all your video into one single format, the Player supports all major forms of video and allows streaming of flash based video as well. So you can directly import video from popular video store houses like YouTube.com. Or even have all your friends send you their videos of a common trip that you can upload directly.

The Player also supports audio in MP3 as well as AAC formats. The player has been designed using Flash & Silverlight technologies to allow streaming of FLV and Windows Media content ranging from WMV1 to the MP3:ISO/MPEG Layer 3 formats.

The ability to play any Windows based video content allows a wide range of users to share their content. Basically now my users can view almost every type of video. If your friends or prospective customers don’t have a fast enough internet connection, they can simply download the videos and watch them later.

One of the best features of this player is to allow embedding of watermarks directly into the video. This allows content protection and gives any content provider the freedom to host demos, trailers, adverts or copyrighted video content, without the fear of piracy or content siphoning.

The player allows customized skins and themes that give it a rich look and make the viewing more pleasurable. The playlist editor is easy to work with and the player providers a flexible tool to provide flash and Microsoft based video content to users online.

Highlights of the Player:

- Support across Flash and Microsoft Video content
- Ability to embed watermarks directly into video
- Ability to allow content download using a single click button
- Customizable skins

Click here to check it out

Bitrix Photo Gallery

The first impression you might get when you open the Bitrix Site Manager’s Photo Album is that it resembles any other photo sharing application. However, as soon as you start working with it, the enormous differences become more than apparent.

One of the first things you will notice is the excellent speed of the application. That’s because all the processing of the images – thumbnailing, resizing, labeling, etc are all performed locally. Even a simple Dual Core Processor based laptop can get your images uploaded in a jiffy ! All the popular formats are supported – like JPEG, PNG, GIF, etc.

Another interesting feature is the bulk upload. It’s extremely irritating to upload pictures one by one onto any picture gallery. And it’s even more irritating if I have clicked the snaps with a high resolution camera and each picture is about 5 MB in size. Bitrix’s Photo Album module automatically compresses, resizes, uploads and thumbnails your pictures – all with a single click. I can even upload folders directly. Of course, there is always a web interface too. However, if the image is uploaded through the web interface, our servers will do the rendering of the image. The application supports multiple users simultaneously uploading and downloading images from the gallery.

Over time as your pictures begin to balloon out of control, Bitrix’s intelligent engine can help you create intuitive web albums. And you can create pre defined lists of people you want to give access to. So your personal pictures could be reserved for close friends, while your company’s holiday pics can be share with everyone. Of course large number of pics means I will need to frequently search for specific ones. The module has an inbuilt search engine and a tag cloud. So I can tag my images while uploading and map them to folders and albums based on specific tags.

Often when my friends and colleagues invite me to view their pictures, I want to have images that I can directly transfer to my phone. But because they have uploaded heavy images – I need to wait for these images to download. Bitrix’s Photo Album allows me to set pre defined download limits for each picture. So my visitors don’t have to wait for images to download over a slow connection.

Users can vote for pics. So I can run interesting games and competitions on my site and also allow individuals to pick out winners.

Highlights of the Module:

-	Lightning fast application, even over the web; due to local image rendering
-	Support for all popular image formats like .Gif, .JPEG, .PNG, etc
-	Bulk Uploading and Multi User
-	Direct web interface
-	Intelligent Album creator with tag cloud
-	Super efficient search engine with tag based indexing

Click here to check it out
