Welcome to Bitrix24

What's all the buzz about? An introduction to Bitrix24.

Some say the planet is going down this year. I say - we're only getting started! Please welcome Bitrix24 - your indispensable social intranet! Here are some quick facts about the new product:
- It's social and it's about communicating with your colleagues and with contacts outside your company;
- Bitrix24 is a SaaS product. It's deployed in the Cloud and does not need to be installed or adjusted manually;
- The product will be delivered both as a free service (for managing projects in smaller groups) and via monthly paid subscriptions (paid plans have more functions and unlimited users).
We performed massive research on the most popular B2B/B2C products and services last year, and we continue to monitor all trends in social communications and business software. We found out that there are a lot of tools spread across the internet that could be used for managing one’s daily routine.
Based on the success of our Intranet/Extranet solution, we decided to create a new Cloud product that would incorporate only the best features of Bitrix Intranet and maintain a simplicity that will have mass appeal. Philosophically, we decided that this product will shift from a pure collaboration and project management tool to a tool for social interaction and smart content evaluation (search, ratings, knowledge base etc.).
I am sure many of you will like the new GUI and design, developed in cooperation with a Russian web agency - AIC (www.aic.ru). Nonetheless, some of the features of the interface are being re-considered, meaning they will be even better! So, just a little bit more patience...

Activity Stream for truly social collaboration

Intuitive, convenient, and simple - these were set as the main goals for the new GUI. The re-designed Activity Stream has become the glue of the whole project. Tasks, projects, contacts directory, employee and workgroup changes, CRM, etc. - all of these are displayed in the Activity Stream (of course, based on access permissions of each user and according to their personal settings). This is basically your starting and ending point for all your projects and daily activities in Bitrix24.

Instant Messenger - slick, handy, and in high demand

One of the most popular features in Bitrix Intranet is the built-in Instant Messenger. After several months of hard work, it finally looks very close to what we wanted for Bitrix24. Each tab has the name of the user involved in the conversation and contains both the current conversation and the "History" icon which displays all messages ever exchanged with this user. Instead of links to messages, we've added a small panel with company contacts and a "New Message / New Notification" indicator (attached to the bottom of the page by default, but can be dragged-and-dropped to 6 different locations).

Bitrix24.com website - available soon!

Starting this week, you will be able to experience our new website (also created by AIC web designers) - www.bitrix24.com. Although the site has a limited number of sections available for public access and you cannot buy any commercial subscriptions of Bitrix24 at the moment, it does offer more details about the tools and features that will be included in the product. Some slight changes will be made to the content of the site, but not many.

Product release date

The product release date is April 12, 2012. This is the day we're planning to give public access to the site and offer commercial subscriptions of Bitrix24 along with the free edition.

Free invites - Get your Bitrix24 free and uncut

A limited number of Bitrix Partners have been involved in beta-testing of our product. Now the time has come for alpha-testing of Bitrix24. My colleagues from the Sales Dept. are distributing free invites right now. The invites can be used for creating Bitrix24 intranets, so please shoot them an email to sales@bitrixsoft.com

Your feedback and suggestions (we really need this, thank you!)

Because the product is still in the production stage, there might be some minor issues with the layout and GUI. Please do inform us about every possible or explicit or runtime caused GUI issues. There's a special forum section you can use to notify our technical and production staff about your testing results and also post your recommendation and suggestions: http://www.bitrixsoft.com/support/forum51/. We really appreciate your feedback and help in making Bitrix24 a high-quality social intranet!

Rate vs Like. Comparing two types of rating systems.

Recently, I tried to analyze the tools and latest trends for rating content and ranking content authors. The results were quite unusual.

It used to be that everyone simply used something like a 5-star rating system. You could judge the quality or level of satisfaction on Amazon or other large site and decide if this product or service was worth buying or not.

YouTube was one of the major services that changed their rating system in the last year.
They decided that users are a bit “lazy”. They don’t have time or desire to ‘split hairs’ – that is, think through the question:  “Well, it could be a 3, but maybe it is close enough to 4… or…”.
So very often the 5-star system is used for indicating polar decisions: 1 – dislike, 5 – like.

Google changed this for YouTube because in their case it is adequate to know whether a person generally likes or dislikes something.  YouTube has a large base of users, of course.  Very large.

This can be used to get statistics for some types of the content. But if you want do a bit more data-mining, it’s better to enable classic 5-star rating scheme.
Within a year, you will be able to rate the content and analyze how many people voted and what the average rate was.

I noticed that the Like/Dislike feature is more social than its predecessor:  you can check if one of your friends or close colleagues rated this or that item. Also, some systems link the Like feature to a personal user ranking. Each content contributor can get some additional points (or lose some) for the content they published.

In either system, popular content can be displayed more prominently in search results, since the ranking can be used to influence the overall relevance to the search query. Liking of content can also increase the author’s ranking.

So it is up to you to decide which system is better to use in your projects.
I’m really interested in what you think and what type of system you prefer.

Installing Bitrix: how to save your time?

The Bitrix Intranet family of products was developed on the foundation of the Bitrix Framework. So all the Bitrix Intranet editions are web-based applications written in PHP.

Because it is web-native, this type of applications is cross-platform and can be run in any environment supporting common web and database servers.

As we mention on our website, our products are packed and ready for use on Windows (.exe) or on Linux or any other Unix systems (.tar.gz and .zip).

Shared hosting: to use or not to use

Last month we decided to check top 10 of German hosting companies.
We used only free trial plans this time.

So the idea was to see how friendly the hosting company is, what are the minimal system options they provide to their clients and which potential problems can arise during the Bitrix product installation.
